INTERVENTION FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE AQUAE TAURI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
The project focused on the restoration and enhancement of the Aquae Tauri archaeological site and the creation of an archaeological park showcasing important remains from a Roman-era installation. The site, already known in Etruscan times for the hydrothermal phenomena characterizing the area, is represented in the Tabula Peutingeriana as a resting place for travelers.
The archaeological area is located northeast of the municipality of Civitavecchia, between the Tolfa mountains and the A12 Rome – Civitavecchia highway. The project for the Aquae Tauri site included the conservation restoration of the large elliptical basin, carved directly into the travertine bedrock forming the hill on which the complex stands.
Furthermore, the site’s accessibility, which had previously been difficult, was carefully addressed. With the introduction of stabilized-earth pathways and wooden walkways equipped with informational panels and seating for visitors, the site is now more accessible. The choice of materials and strategies used have ensured a cohesive, integrated result that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape while respecting the site’s archaeological and historical nature.
